Balrogs Song

Balrogs Song

Evildan, Sion 15.12.2002

I cannot remember walking through the woods
seeing spirits, swift, and cloaked with hoods
I cannot remember sensing life in honoured trees
and humming along the song of busy bees
I never looked inside the rainbow's arch
or raised my face and let it parch

Below the earth at roots I gnawed
wishing a winter that never thawed
eating rock and fire i'd spit
until i found that bottomless pit
in which my spirit I could pour
and wait forever, nevermore

For chirping I could never hear
dull sounds alone now please my ear
of rock that crumbles in my claws
and metal trippling from my jaws
of stenching water's gentle flow
that murmurs darker tales of woe

Shut from the world of song and joy
envious, they say, this old decoy,
lurking deep behind the yawning gate
I wait and hold the saddest fate
that can be met deep underground
where they will stay, forever bound

This daring, foolish, fair-haired folk
with steel at hand and skillful stroke
comes stepping into my deep den
but what awaits is beyond their ken
What boldness drives them to their end
is it not with awe that they descend?

Let them come and let them see
let them stand, with unbent knee
let them scorn and taunt and mock
yet the gate is in its lock
and soon they'll meet their obscure fate
and be, for all the rest, a perfect bait

This radiant wisdom of the upper world
down here, it stays eternally unfurled
the darkness holds much wiser lore
which fair-folk ever will abhor
that lore is whispered, night by night,
by dreamy sleepers in mortal fright

While seasons passed and voices sung
while beauty blossomed under stars and sun
while winds told tales, then called them lies
dwelled i alone and reckon'd the price
Hail me, I am the chtonyian will
with voice and breath that reek of sill

When what was lost will find itself again
O fair ones, will you have paid your debts by then?
